“Beneath is the culmination of my engagement with my grandmother’s archives. Working as the family photographer for many decades, my grandmother recorded events before my time. With Beneath, I sequence wedding photographs and portraits with images of my family home in California, punctuated by images I made in New York. The dialogue I establish turns the nuclear family inward and on itself. As the title connotes there is something to mine and examine, something buried under the sacred ideology of the “patriarchal family unit: the original... oppressive structure from which all other systems of destructive social and political control emanate” (Harry Sword, Monolithic Undertow, 214). - Audrey Kenison
